Save Internet Radio

This is a serious threat to all of internet radio. If you haven’t heard about this issue, the whole thing just got rolling less than a week ago…

On March 1, 2007 the US Copyright Office stunned the Internet radio industry by releasing a ruling on performance royalty fees that are based exclusively on the number of people tuned into an Internet radio station, rather than on a portion of the station’s revenue. They discarded all evidence presented by webcasters about the potentially crippling effect on the industry of such a rate structure, and rubber-stamped the rates requested by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).

Under this royalty structure, an Internet radio station with an average listenership of 1000 people would owe $134,000 in royalties during 2007 - plus $98,000 in back payments for 2006. In 2008 they would owe $171,000, and $220,000 in 2009.

There is no way for a station with 1000 listeners to make that kind of money. That’s over $11 per listener per month in 2007. No Internet radio station currently operating comes even close to that kind of income. Also keep in mind that 1000 listeners is not a large number. Popular stations like Radio Paradise, SOMA, Digitally Imported, radioio, etc have many times that many listeners.

In other words, if they are allowed to stand these rates are a death sentence for independent Internet radio stations. The only stations that would survive would be those who can afford to operate at that kind of loss, such as AOL (who would owe over $20,000,000 in 2006, far in excess of their income from radio).

New Music In February

February 12th, 2007 1 Comment »

The mix countinues with new this month from alternative acts Of Montreal, Deerhoof, Camera Obscura,  and Josh Rouse’s side project recorded at his apartment last summer with his girlfriend called She’s Spanish I’m American that is some really great pop music.

New Rock includes cuts from The Smithereen’s fun Meet The Smithereens album, a cut by cut recreation of Meet The Beatles. Also some Nils Longren and a bunch of Josh Homme related stuff - he’s the drummer in the Eagles Of Death Metal (listen for Cherry Cola or their cover of the Steeler’s Wheel 70s hti Stuck In The Middle With You) and also a few cuts from the Desert Sessions project with PJ Harvey.

Bunch of new Country this month including a lot of cuts from the Drive-By Truckers. I just love their song Danko / Manuel. Also we’ve added some Taylor Smith, Alejandro Escovedo, Little Big Town and some great tracks from the Kinky Friend Tribute -  Dwight Yoakum’s version of Rapid City, South Dakota is a treat.

Hi Secret Agents

We’ve placed our first ad - on Secret Agent Josephine. If you’ve come to visit, welcome.

What is Radio Stranahan? It’s totally free - and currently totally commercial free - internet radio station that plays a blend of classic rock, indie rock, plus a little jazz, country, hip hop, blues, and even a little comedy thrown in for good measure.  It’s a throwback to the experimental days of radio where everything wasn’t so formatted and the only rule was the music had to be good. You can listen to it right now using the Listen Now links.
We hope you like our eclectic mix of music and you’ll become a regular listener. We’ll be introducing new shows in the coming weeks, so bookmark our site and come back to visit or just subscribe to our RSS feed to get the latest news.

MP3 Library Reclamation

January 13th, 2007 No Comments »

The heart of any radio station is it’s music library and the ol’ Radio Stranahan library has been a mess. I have music files in about a dozen different folders on three or four different computers. I have some at home, some at work, some on hard drives that aren’t even connected to computers. There’s stuff I ripped from CDs six years ago, stuff I downloaded from iTunes, stuff from eMusic, stuff from Yahoo and stuff that I literally have no idea where it came from.
I’ve been putting off the grand unification for some time because I’ve dreaded the amount of work it was going to be. On the other hand, not having an organized music library has held up some of the stuff I want to do on Radio Stranahan such as get shows together. In some cases, I just haven’t had the songs I need to do the show I want.

I started work today, moving everything around to more logical places. That’s not quite as easy as it sound because I have a lot of stuff that won’t work for Radio Stranahan but that I don’t want to delete. For example, the software that we use to run the station (Spacial’s SAM Broadcaster version 4) doesn’t read the music I bought from iTunes or Yahoo. And there are some things I don’t want in the radio library, like podcasts.

I also have a lot of disorganized music that’s not in the right file folder or any folder at all or that has screwed up file names or tags. Hundreds of files, really. I found some software called FixTunes that does a lot of this automatically and will even put the music in folders and get the proper album art. So far I’m just trying FixTunes out but I’ll report back about whether it works well or not.

Station Offline / Online

December 31st, 2006 No Comments »

Sometimes you’ll notice the radio station is offline. Do me a favor - if the station is offline, check back again sometime. It happens more than I’d like but I’m still figuring out the causes.

One main cause is that the cats jump up on the monitor of the computer the station runs on and then jump on the keyboard or hit the power button. I don’t think that happens to major radio stations.
